Achilles Tendinopathy
Achilles tendinopathy refers to the degeneration within the large tendon which joins the calf muscles the heel bone. It occurs commonly in the mid portion of the tendon but also occurs at the bone tendon junction.
There are many factors that can affect the load being placed through the Achilles tendon these include:
- Change in training (including frequency, duration, intensity and training surfaces)
- Reduced rest times
- Biomechanical abnormalities
- Poor footwear
- Decreased muscle flexibility and joint range of motion
It is relatively common in recreational exercisers and individuals active in sports that involve jumping and running.
Treatment options include: Rest from provocative activity, Heel raises, Orthotics / arch support, Footwear, Anti-inflammatories, Massage and soft tissue therapy, Stretching. Strengthening exercises.
